Saint Heron Residency NY 2022

In 2022, Solange Knowles’ Saint Heron hosted a ceramic residency in New York City for Black female ceramicists. I was one of three people chosen to design an art piece that would push the boundaries of my technical comforts, and which I would get to build with the guidance of mentors.

My mentor was Anina Major, a ceramic artist and ceramics teacher at the Rhode Island School of Design.

For my piece I chose to build a ceramic stool that had a curved back reminiscent of ziggurat steps. This would turn out to be the beginnings of a language I would continue to explore of layering and using the number three continuously as a symbol in my practice.

The number three represents the three worlds in mysticism. The human world, the natural world, and the spirit world.
